Guthrie Theater, Minneapolis
Penumbra Theatre, a St. Paul company that focuses on the African American experience, will present August Wilson’s “Gem of the Ocean” at the Guthrie Theater April 18 through May 11, 2008. Wilson, a Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright, is acclaimed for his “20th Century Cycle” of ten plays chronicling African American life decade by decade from 1900 to 2000. “Gem of the Ocean,” written in 2003, is set in 1904 Pittsburgh and depicts the struggles of the first generation of freed slaves. Penumbra is presenting all ten of the Century Cycle plays over the next five years.
Another highlight at the Guthrie this season is the debut of a new musical, “Little House on the Prairie,” based on the children’s books written by Laura Ingalls Wilder. The popular books are fictionalized accounts of her life growing up on the Midwestern frontier in the 1870s and ‘80s.
“Little House on the Prairie” will open August 15, with performances continuing through October 5. (In addition, there will be 19 preview performances beginning July 26.) The Guthrie is launching this world premiere with a national tour in mind.
The Guthrie Theater is on the Mississippi riverfront at the edge of downtown Minneapolis. For ticket information, call the box office at 612-377-2224 or go to www.guthrietheater.org.
