Fewer anglers are venturing out due to recent cool temperatures, therefore few reports are available this week. Anglers that have ventured out report steady fishing action, with quite a few walleyes being taken.

Information in this report has been provided courtesy of community organizations throughout Minnesota. This report is brought to you by Explore Minnesota Tourism .

Anglers may obtain fishing licenses 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, by dialing 1-888-665-4236, or accessing DNR License Sales.

Northeast Minnesota

International Falls

As freezing temperatures set in fewer anglers are heading out. Anglers that do venture out are being rewarded. Walleyes have been hitting in roughly 30 feet of water, with minnows working best. You should not have to travel far from any of the launches. Near the Ranier Rapids, for instance, fishing has been good both above and below the rapids. To learn more, dial 1-800-325-5766, or visit www.rainylake.org

Kabetogama

Water temperatures are hovering around 40-degrees on Lakes Kabetogama and Namakan, and it appears there may be just one more week of open water angling. The hardiest anglers continue to venture out and are catching some of the nicest walleyes of the season. Several anglers report many catch-and-release walleyes over 26-inches in length. Harvest-size walleyes under 17-inches have been elusive, however anglers are landing some nice saugers and an occasional perch. While crappie anglers report an inconsistent bite, expect to take fish over a foot in length if a good crappie bed is located. Northern pike action has been fair, with sucker minnows working best. For the most fish, hit Lost, Daily and Nebraska bays. Walleyes are being pulled from roughly 30 feet of water on vertically jigged round-headed jigs and ice fishing rapalas. For more information on lakes Kabetogama and Namakan, dial 1-800-524-9085, or check out www.kabetogama.com

Cook & Tower/Lake Vermilion

Walleyes are in their fall feeding frenzy as lake temperatures hover just above 40-degrees. A jig and minnow combination worked in 35 feet of water has been key to success. Muskies are not yet responding to large crankbaits, but will soon attack these lures when trolled around the deep breaks close to shore. Reports of one angler recently catching a few muskies on a day trip by merely tossing a "pounder” have been verified, so stay flexible in your approach. Whitefish netters are having even more success as the lake temperatures drop and the days get shorter. To find out more, check out www.lakevermilionresorts.com

Ely

To learn where and when the fish are biting, dial 1-800-777-7281, or visit www.ely.org

Duluth/Lake Superior & inland lakes

To locate charter boats and guide services, and to find out where the fish are biting, dial 1-800-4-duluth, or visit www.visitduluth.com

Northwest Minnesota

Baudette/Lake of the Woods & the Rainy River

Rainy River fishing has finally taken off, with walleyes measuring 14- to 25-inches being reported. Anglers are still waiting for the really large walleyes to move in but this has been a good start and lots of fun! Fish continue to bite around the Lighthouse Gap, in Four Mile Bay, and straight out from the Morris Point Gap in 17-30 feet of water. For the most fish, anchor and jig using live or frozen shiners. To learn more, dial 1-800-382-FISH, or visit www.lakeofthewoodsmn.com

Cass Lake/Deer River/Lake Winnibigoshish & Cutfoot Sioux

For information on the best locations and techniques for fishing area lakes, dial 1-800-356-8615, or visit www.casslake.com

Bemidji

Reports will not be available until anglers begin the ice fishing season. For area lodging, attractions, and other travel information, dial 1-800-458-2223, or check out www.visitbemidji.com

Miltona

To find out what is biting and where, dial 1-877-833-2350, or visit www.VisitLakeMiltona.com

To learn where and when to fish, dial 1-800-728-6926, or check out www.pinerivermn.com

Brainerd/Nisswa Area Lakes

To find out what species of fish are being taken and what methods are working best, dial 1-800-450-2838, or visit www.explorebrainerdlakes.com

Isle/Onamia/Lake Mille Lacs

Very little information is available about Lake Mille Lacs fishing now that the water temperatures have dipped down to 42-degrees. These cold water conditions can often shut down an active fall bite on Lake Mille Lacs. A few anglers have had luck late at night, especially during the full moon phase this past weekend. Still, most anglers are staying home and gearing up for a great ice fishing season. For more information, dial 1-888-350-2692, or check out www.millelacs.com

Willmar Lakes Area

The weather has caused fishing to turn sporadic. Anglers have had success, however, on Green Lake in depths ranging from 10-70 feet! Willmar and Foot lakes have been producing lots of nice crappies and sunnies right off shore near the fairgrounds. Some large walleyes are being taken during evening hours. Shore anglers are taking some nice fish from Big Kandiyohi Lake. Expect fishing to be great this weekend when temperatures are expected to rise into the upper-50s. To learn more, dial 1-800-845-8747, or visit www.seeyouinwillmar.com

Twin Cities Greater Metropolitan vicinity

Northeast Metro/Chisago Lakes Area

Anglers fishing the channel between Big and Little Green lakes during evening hours are reporting a great walleye bite. For northerns, try bobber fishing with a heavy sucker minnow on Sunrise Lake. To find out more, dial 651/257-1177, or visit www.chisagolakeschamber.com

White Bear Lake

To learn about which species are biting and where they can be located, dial 651/653-5122, or visit www.ExploreWhiteBear.org

 Waconia

For information on where to locate fish on Lake Waconia, dial 952/442-5812, or check out www.destinationwaconia.org

Southern Minnesota

Albert Lea

Crappies are moving in and can be found near the Brookside Channel on Fountain Lake. Anglers are catching walleyes near the Blackmer Bridge when using colored jigs, bobbers and minnows. For the most fish, hit the channel on Albert Lea Lake. To learn more, visit www.albertleatourism.org, or dial 507/373-2316

Lake City

The walleye and sauger bite is in full swing in the upper Mississippi River portions of Pool #4, all the way from the top of Lake Pepin to the dam above Red Wing. Anglers having the most success with large numbers of fish are using blade baits, three-ways, and jigs. The smallmouth bass are really on a feeding frenzy – for some great bass action, hit any one of the rip rap shorelines on Lake Pepin. Don’t park your boat yet and miss out on the great fall action that this area has to offer! To find out more, dial 1-877-525-3248, or check out www.lakecitymn.org

 Cannon Falls

For information on which species of fish are biting and how to find them, dial 507/263-2289, or visit www.cannonfalls.org

Ortonville

Rain and windy weather have kept most anglers off Big Stone Lake. For those that have ventured out, there is the typical fall bite at the foot of the lake near Ortonville, with reports of anglers getting a lot of small walleyes. There have also been a few reports of large walleyes in the 6- to 8-pound range. Most techniques, from slip bobbers to pitching jigs to crappie rigs, are producing fish – still, timing and patience have been key. For more information, check out www.bigstonelake.com, or dial 1-800-568-5722

Fewer anglers are venturing out due to cooler temperatures, as well as the recent wet and windy weather, therefore few reports are available this week. Anglers that have ventured out report steady fishing action, with quite a few walleyes being taken.

Northeast Minnesota

International Falls

Nearly everyone venturing out on to Rainy Lake and the Rainy River is being rewarded with great walleye action. You don’t have to travel far from any of the launches to find good fishing. On Rainy Lake, hit Black Bay, around the islands east of Jackfish Bay, and near Birch Point. On the Rainy River, fish below the Ranier Rapids just above the dam, and just west of the rocks below the Ron Hall Access on Shorewood Drive. Minnows have been best. For more information, dial 1-800-325-5766, or visit www.rainylake.org

Kabetogama

For information on lakes Kabetogama and Namakan, dial 1-800-524-9085, or check out www.kabetogama.com

Cook & Tower/Lake Vermilion

On Lake Vermilion, walleye fishing has been excellent in 30-40 feet of water, with jig and minnow combinations turning the most fish. A few nice crappies and even an occasional walleyes are coming from the deep hole in Niles. Musky hunters are having limited success, and recently taking only a handful of fish which may be due to the quick cool down in water temperatures. This could change overnight as the whitefish continue to move shallow to spawn. To find out more, check out www.lakevermilionresorts.com

Ely

Crappies are starting to show up in greater numbers, especially on Twin, White Iron and Fall lakes. These fish can be found suspended six to ten feet from the bottom in 20-35 feet of water. For the most fish, use a minnow under a slip bobber, or a jig and minnow combination. Walleyes are becoming more active in the deeper holes on Shagawa and White Iron lakes, with floating jig heads and floating lindy rigs working best. Please remember that the weather can change rapidly so always wear a life jacket when venturing out, especially on these colder waters.
To learn more, dial 1-800-777-7281, or visit www.ely.org

Duluth/Lake Superior & inland lakes

To locate charter boats and guide services, and to find out where the fish are biting, dial 1-800-4-duluth, or visit www.visitduluth.com

Northwest Minnesota

Baudette/Lake of the Woods & the Rainy River

There was a good shiner run in the Rainy River on the night of October 23. The early morning and late afternoon bite has picked up, and large walleyes should soon move into the Rainy River – the water temperatures are holding at roughly 40-43 degrees. Most of the walleyes, however, remain in Lake of the Woods, and there has been a fantastic bite just out from the Lighthouse Gap. Depths of 17-30 feet are giving up lots of walleyes and saugers, and even an occasional jumbo perch and northern pike. For the most fish, anchor and use a live or frozen shiner on a 3/8-ounce or smaller jig. To learn more, dial 1-800-382-FISH, or visit www.lakeofthewoodsmn.com

Cass Lake/Deer River/Lake Winnibigoshish & Cutfoot Sioux

To learn of the best locations and methods for fishing area lakes, dial 1-800-356-8615, or visit www.casslake.com

Bemidji

No reports will be available until anglers begin ice fishing. For area lodging, attractions, and other travel more information, dial 1-800-458-2223, or check out www.visitbemidji.com

Park Rapids

To learn where and when the fish are biting, dial 1-800-247-0054, or visit www.ParkRapids.com

Central Minnesota

Miltona

The water temperatures are now in the low 40’s, and are dropping each night. Walleyes are being pulled from depths of 35-40 feet of water, with jig and minnow combinations working best. Crappie action has slowed somewhat with the cooler water temperatures. For a few fish, hit any of the remaining green weeds or head to their typical fall and winter haunts. To learn more, dial 1-877-833-2350, or visit www.VisitLakeMiltona.com

Pine River Area Lakes

Cold, windy and rainy weather have put a stop to many of the fishing trips planned in the Pine River area this past week. Those who did venture out reported good walleye action, especially on days when a low pressure system was approaching. Walleyes are being pulled from just about every depth, except after dark when very shallow waters are best. During the daylight hours, anglers are finding fish at the base of the breaklines in up to 60 feet of water on some of the larger lakes. A chartreuse or yellow jig tipped with a minnow has been best during the day. Muskie anglers report that the larger fish are on the move on Leech, Winnibighosh and Cass lakes, as well as on lakes on the Boy River chain. Northern pike are eagerly hitting jig and minnow combinations and large crankbaits trolled or cast along the deep edge of the green weedbeds. For panfish, use a slow retrieve. Some of the shallow public accesses have had a light coating of ice on colder mornings, but it is usually gone by mid-afternoon. This week’s tip is to cast a shallow-running, minnow-style artificial across a channel after dark since this most likely where you’ll find walleyes. To find out more, dial 1-800-728-6926, or check out www.pinerivermn.com

Brainerd/Nisswa Area Lakes

To find out what species of fish are being taken and what methods are working best, dial 1-800-450-2838, or visit www.explorebrainerdlakes.com

Isle/Onamia/Lake Mille Lacs

Just a few walleye anglers continue to venture out onto Lake Mille Lacs. With some warmer daytime temperatures the perch fishing should heat up. Now is also the time to try your hand at some fall reef walleye fishing. The reef markers have been removed so use caution when traveling through the shallows. Northern pike and muskie action has been slower than average. For more information, dial 1-888-350-2692, or check out www.millelacs.com

Willmar Lakes Area

To learn where and when the fish are biting, dial 1-800-845-8747, or visit www.seeyouinwillmar.com

Twin Cities Greater Metropolitan vicinity

Northeast Metro/Chisago Lakes Area

Fishing is great between Big and Little Green lakes where anglers are pulling walleyes from 4-12 feet of water. Slip bobbers and minnows are working best. Sunnies and crappies are being pulled from Chisago Lake, as well as in front of the swimming beach on South Lindstrom Lake – depths of 8-12 feet are giving up the majority of fish. Sunrise Lake is giving up lots of bass and northern pike.

Ortonville

For information on which species are being pulled from Big Stone Lake, check out www.bigstonelake.com, or dial 1-800-568-5722

Albert Lea

Anglers are having success with the walleyes and crappies using jigs during early evening hours near the Blackmer Channel on Fountain Lake. A few walleyes are also being taken on jig and minnow combinations at the channel. Walleyes are active near the channel on Albert Lea Lake as well, and hitting jigs tipped with minnows. To learn more, visit www.albertleatourism.org, or dial 507/373-2316

Lake City

The walleyes and sauger bite is in full swing in the upper Mississippi River portions of Pool #4, all the way from the top of Lake Pepin to the dam above Red Wing. Anglers having the most success with large numbers of fish are using blade baits, three-ways, and jigs. The smallmouth bass are really on a feeding frenzie – for some great bass action, hit any one of the rip rap shorelines on Lake Pepin.

Hopefully temperatures will become more moderate and anglers will be able to set the hook on the open water before hard water sets in. For more information, check out www.bigstonelake.com, or dial 1-800-568-5722

Northeast Minnesota

St. Croix State Park -east of Hinckley
While the trees and shrubs are no longer at their peak, there are still beautiful pockets of fall color, especially in the golden-orange tamaracks and in the ground colors of the yellow, gold and rust blueberry shrubs and native grasses. And the burnished red-orange of the oaks lend a rich and colorful background for a perfect fall hike and camping experience.

Most of the other state parks in this region of the state are reported to be past peak.

Northwest Minnesota

 Big Bog Recreation Area -Waskish
The tamarack trees along the boardwalk and roadsides are stunning, and remain vibrant shades of gold and orange!

Lake Bemidji State Park -Bemidji
Amazingly, at the end of October, many trees are holding on to their leaves, including many oaks and maples. The Rocky Point Trail continues to offer beautiful fall color, especially when the light filters down through the canopy of bright yellow maples. The Bog Trail remains at its peak due to the abundance of brilliant gold and yellow tamaracks off Big Bog Lake. Lots of waterfowl can also be seen staging on Lake Bemidji as they prepare to migrate south.

Most of the other state parks in this region of the state are reported to be past peak.

Central Minnesota

Sibley State Park -north of Willmar
While past peak, there is still some nice fall color in the woods. Many oak trees and poplars are holding on to their leaves, and will provide a splendid display of gold, rust and scarlet for another week or so. Begin your visit at the Interpretive Center for park orientation, and be sure to hike or drive to Mount Tom for an incredible view!

Most of the other state parks in this region of the state are reported to be past peak.

Twin Cities Metropolitan Vicinity

Fort Snelling State Park -St. Paul
While the leaves are falling fast, there are still patches of nice fall color within the park. Around the west side of Snelling Lake the oaks are still displaying lots of copper, rust and gold leaves. Visitors are also enjoying the many wildlife sightings which become more common when the foliage becomes less dense.

Most of the other state parks in this region of the state are reported to be past peak.

Southern Minnesota

Nerstrand Big Woods State Park -Nerstrand, south of Northfield
Beautiful shades of yellow, gold, orange and maroon, and every shade of light tan to rich dark brown, can be seen within the park. There are still leaves on the trees, but there are also a lot of leaves on the forest floor and trails. Many birds in migration are stopping to feed on berries left in the woods. Hidden Falls is flowing nicely with the recent rain and is very picturesque. Red-headed woodpeckers are easily seen in the areas around the office feeding on acorns. Now is the time to come for a beautiful fall walk on the park trails.

Frontenac State Park -Frontenac, south of Red Wing
There was still some very nice color throughout the park and along Highway 61 as of today, October 29, although the current wet and windy weather will likely take down many of the leaves. Expect pockets of good fall color to linger, especially in the more protected areas, through this weekend, October 30-November 1.

Great River Bluffs State Park -southeast of Winona
Earlier this week, the fall color was still very beautiful. The rich shades of red, orange and yellow are starting to fade, and leaves are dropping to the ground. Now is the time to get out and enjoy what remains above ground.

Forestville/Mystery Cave State Park -Preston
Some oaks remain at peak fall color, and continue to display rich gold, russet, maroon and brown leaves. Some of the aspen have retained their bright yellow leaves, and various other species are contributing shades of red, orange and yellow. Fall color remains beautiful in areas of the park, but this weekend will likely be the final weekend of 2009 to view fall color above ground at Forestville/Mystery Cave.

Whitewater State Park -Elba, north of St. Charles
The oaks that dominate most hillsides in Southeastern Minnesota’s Blufflands have reached their fall color peak. Their various shades of tan to brown to orange to scarlet will brighten the landscape for at least another week, and should be wonderful this weekend, October 30 – November 1. Most other trees are past their peak, although many maples along the Mississippi River have retained their beautiful yellow and orange leaves. Nearby, hundreds of tundra swans have arrived over the last two weeks and can be seen on the Mississippi near Weaver and Brownsville. Their numbers will build into the thousands within the next three weeks. Please see Whitewater State Park’s website for a schedule of interpretive programs. And, Carley State Park, located just northwest of Whitewater, and John A. Latsch, located just to the northeast and overlooking the Mississippi River, also have an abundance of oak trees, and are reported to offer beautiful fall color at this time.

Sakatah Lake State Park -Waterville, west of Faribault
Fall color is past peak, but pockets of nice fall color remain, including some very stunning individual trees. Most of the other trees have lost their leaves. Some of the maples are holding on to their bright yellow and orange leaves. Many of the park’s oak trees are displaying gold, rust, maroon, yellow and brown hues.

Anglers may obtain fishing licenses 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, by dialing 1-888-665-4236, or accessing DNR License Sales.

Water temperatures have dropped considerably. Fishing remains steady, and the walleyes are feeding heavily in many areas of the state.

Northeast Minnesota

International Falls

For information on where the fish are biting and what techniques are working best, dial 1-800-325-5766, or visit www.rainylake.org

Kabetogama

Water temperatures have dipped into the low to mid 40’s, and freeze-up is only a few weeks away on lakes Kabetogama and Namakan. Recent cool temperatures have not kept anglers off the water, with anglers finding lots of fish in their fall hang-outs. The best locations have been the reefs and shorelines in roughly 35 feet of water. For the most fish, use a jig and minnow combination, however slip sinker rigs, deep-running lures, and vertically jigging with a piece of minnow are also working well. Anglers with a bit of patience are taking limits of 14-plus inch fish under the 17 inch slot. An occasional crappie is being taken by walleye anglers so a good crappie bite might be right around the corner. For further information, dial 1-800-524-9085, or check out www.kabetogama.com

Cook & Tower/Lake Vermilion

The fall walleye bite on Lake Vermilion has started in earnest, with fish having moved to deeper waters and hungry for jigs tipped with minnows. Anglers having the most success are fishing depths of 28-40 feet. Lake temperatures are in the mid 40’s, and muskie fishing is fair at best – the classic troll bite has yet to begin. The green weeds may also be holding fish. Whitefish netting is open, and this may be a good kick-off for the troll bite. For more information, check out www.lakevermilionresorts.com

Ely

Fishing has been slow this week, mostly due to the recent cold, windy, and wet weather. Some scattered walleyes have been reported on Shagawa and White Iron lakes, but fish have been few and far between. Once the weather systems stabilize and the colder temperatures take hold there should be a resurgence in action. With the colder temperatures, higher wind gusts, and rough water conditions it is very important that you always keep your life jackets on.

On Lake of the Woods, weather has turned more stable and this should result in a more consistent shiner minnow run. Water temperatures have dipped to the lower 40’s, which is perfect for a shiner run. Expect the walleyes to soon be chasing them up the river. Charter boats are heading west beyond Zippel Bay, and anchoring and jigging for walleyes and saugers. Those having the most success are fishing in 17-24 feet of water. The Lighthouse Gap and Pine Island areas are also producing fish. Walleyes are coming from the more shallow depths, and the saugers are slightly deeper, which is typical of this time of year. The saugers are very abundant.

Bemidji

Area lake water temperatures are in the low 40s. Anglers are still venturing out, however the timing of their outings is based on weather conditions. Walleye anglers are catching fish along the steep breaks with access to deep water. Walleyes like to be near their food in cold water, so anglers should watch their sonar for baitfish and larger fish. Most walleye anglers are using a jig and minnow combination – for the most fish, stay vertical over the fish, and consider down-sizing to a smaller jig and minnow with lighter line if the fish are reluctant to bite. Tulibees and whitefish are fall spawning species and they will begin to spawn soon, typically where the walleyes spawn in the spring. Muskies and large northern pike often hunt for tulibees and whitefish, and this can concentrate the larger fish into these areas late in the fall. Most of the docks will be removed from the public accesses soon, so anglers should be prepared to launch their boats without the aid of a dock. For more information, dial 1-800-458-2223, or check out www.visitbemidji.com

Park Rapids

Water temperatures are currently in the high 40’s, and anglers are having lots of success. While fall fishing has been great, unstable weather has resulted in less-than-favorable fishing conditions. Walleyes are being pulled from 18-24 feet of water, but some are coming from very shallow waters on some of the larger lakes that are more than 30 feet deep. Redtails, creek chubs and shiners have all been productive, with the larger baitfish working best. Northern pike have been very active in the shallow to mid-depth weed flats, and are responding to both live bait and artificial lures such as spinnerbaits. Bluegill and crappie activity has slowed substantially, but when an active school is located expect some monster panfish. Crappie minnows and small jigs have been best – stay on the move and explore the weedlines until fish are located. Muskie action has been good, especially after dark. The most successful anglers are trolling large muskie plugs, with some anglers taking some when casting. Largemouth bass are active and situated in the shallow lilypads and reeds. For the most action, use a 3/8-ounce northland jungle jig. For further information, dial 1-800-247-0054, or visit www.ParkRapids.com

Central Minnesota

Miltona

The water temperatures have fallen into the 40’s on Lake Miltona, and fishing remains steady. Walleyes have moved to deeper waters and can be found in depths of 25-35 feet. Most fish are being caught using jig and minnow combinations, but some fish are coming in on bottom bouncers and spinners. The most productive colors have been chartreuse and orange. Crappie action has slowed somewhat due to the cold water temperatures, but a few fish continue to be pulled from the green weeds. Try pink or orange jigs tipped with a crappie minnow for the most fish. Muskie fishing has slowed dramatically. To learn more, dial 1-877-833-2350, or visit www.VisitLakeMiltona.com

Pine River Area Lakes

Lake water temperatures have fallen into the high 40s. Walleyes continue to feed heavily, and are being taken from shallow waters at night, and from 50-60 foot depths during the day. Jig and minnow combinations have been best, but slowly trolled live bait rigs are also producing fish. Northern pike remain active along the green weedlines. Largemouth bass action has slowed as the water has cooled, but bass are still being taken by walleye anglers using jig and minnow combinations. Panfish are active, but responding more to slower presentations. Use the smallest possible crappie minnow on 1/16-ounce jig head. Look for crappies and sunnies to be suspended off the deep edge of the live weedbeds. This week’s tip is to use the most vertical jig presentation possible during cool water periods. Slowly worked jig and minnow combinations will out-perform any other presentation at this time of year. And, be sure to wear your life vest and stay out of the water since hypothermia sets in rapidly late in the fall season. To find out more, dial 1-800-728-6926, or check out www.pinerivermn.com

Brainerd/Nisswa Area Lakes

Fall fishing action is heating up, and walleye anglers are taking more fish. The Whitefish Chain has been the most productive body of water over the last few weeks, with lots of 14- to 20-inch fish being taken. The walleyes are responding more to live bait, however some anglers are taking a few fish on spinner rigs and nightcrawlers. The most active fish have been hanging out in depths of 18-24 feet. Some nice reports are also coming from Pelican and Gull lakes. In a few more days the fish should turn more active and begin hitting on a regular basis. A few boats are still venturing out in search of bass and northern pike, and reports have been good. Spinnerbaits, plastic worms, and jig and minnow combinations all seem to be working well when used at the weedlines. The panfish bite is fair, with a few crappies now coming in during evening hours. To find out more, dial 1-800-450-2838, or visit www.explorebrainerdlakes.com

Isle/Onamia/Lake Mille Lacs

For information on where the fish are biting, dial 1-888-350-2692, or check out www.millelacs.com

Ortonville

Once again, the weather has made it a challenge to access Big Stone Lake. Rain and much cooler daytime temperatures have kept anglers off the water. Hopefully temperatures will become more moderate and anglers will be able to set the hook on the open water before hard water sets in. For more information, check out www.bigstonelake.com, or dial 1-800-568-5722

Albert Lea

Walleye anglers are taking quite a few fish from Fountain Lake near the Blackmer Bridge during evening hours. Crappies are also being reported. For the most fish, use a jig and minnow combination. To learn more, visit www.albertleatourism.org, or dial 507/373-2316

Lake City

To find out about which species are biting and where they can be located in Lake Pepin, on the Mississippi River, dial 1-877-525-3248, or check out www.lakecitymn.org

During the month of October, there is a special opportunity to view large numbers of raptors at Hawk Ridge in Duluth, along with lots of fall color. Just some of the birds passing through include sharp-shinned and broad-winged hawks, and peregrine falcons. This migration continues into November. Towards the end of October, a drive along Highway 61, southeast of the Twin Cities, offers views of an abundance of waterfowl in the Weaver Bottoms in the Upper Mississippi National Wildlife Refuge.

The following is a list of recent, significant sightings:

A female Surf Scoter was seen on October 20 at Peltier Lake near the city of Centerville in Anoka County. It is most easily observed from Peltier Lake Drive on the east side of the lake. Both Surf Scoter and Long-Tailed Duck were in the harbor at Duluth in St. Louis County on the 20th.

A Pacific Loon and two Red-Throated Loons were on Lake Mille Lacs on October 17, although no specific location was given.

In the city of Cloquet, in Carlton County, a female Black-Backed Woodpecker was found on the 17th. It was on the west side of State Highway 33 and just south of the Cloquet hockey arena.

Northern Shrikes have been reported from several northern locations, as have migrant Golden Eagles and Tundra Swans. Lingering birds that have been reported since last weekend include Chimney Swifts in Ramsey County on October 19, a Ruby-Throated Hummingbird in Dakota County on the 22nd, a Black-Throated Blue Warbler in Rice County on the 20th, a Black-Throated Green Warbler in Hennepin County on the 19th, a few Savannah Sparrows in Cook County on the 20th, and several additional reports of Eastern Phoebe, Barn Swallow, and House Wren.

While most areas of Minnesota are now past peak, some areas are still displaying beautiful crimson, orange, peach and yellow leaves. State parks that offer near peak or just past peak conditions include Frontenac, Great River Bluffs, Whitewater and Lake Louise. The Minnesota Landscape Arboretum at Chaska, and parks in Hennepin, Scott, Carver, Dakota and Wright counties within the Three Rivers Park District will also offer beautiful fall color this week and into this weekend.

On average, peak fall color in the shrubs and trees arrives in the northern one-third of the state the middle of September to early October. The central third of the state is most colorful between late September and early October. Southern Minnesota trees reach the height of their fall color late September to mid-October. One exception is the North Shore of Lake Superior where peak fall color arrives roughly one week later than areas inland from Lake Superior due to the warming effect of the lake.

Fall color conditions can change rapidly due to wind, rain and frost – please call ahead for the most current conditions.
Northeast Minnesota

McCarthy Beach State Park -north of Hibbing
A walk along the trail or through the campground offers an array of fall colors. The aspen and birch are nearing their peak shades of yellow. Many of the maples are holding onto their red and orange leaves, which is rare for late fall. The tamaracks have turned a beautiful golden-yellow. Come take advantage of the unseasonably late fall colors!

Gooseberry Falls State Park -Two Harbors
Fall colors along the shore of Lake Superior are now past peak. The abundant bush honeysuckle are still bright red and very beautiful under the birch trees. The remaining vivid fall colors of the shrubs enhances the views along the Gooseberry River hiking trail. Water levels are up with recent rains, increasing the water flow over the falls. A family of beaver in the Lower Gooseberry River has also been fun to watch.

The birch, aspen, and oak trees are nearing their peak and displaying a wonderful mix of gold, bronze, deep red and maroon. The maple and ash trees are now past their peak. The aspen and birch are glorious shades of golden yellow, and the tamaracks are nearing peak shades of smokey gold and orange. The prairie grasses are rich autumn browns and golds. While the overall peak is fading, the abundance of color, wonderful crisp air and the smell of fall fills the senses.

Northwest Minnesota

 Big Bog Recreation Area -Waskish
The tamarack trees along the boardwalk and roadsides are beautiful and vibrant shades of gold and orange! Many of the other trees are holding on to their yellow and red leaves, which is unusual after the snow that fell last week.

Most other areas in this region of the state are now past peak.

Central Minnesota

Maplewood State Park -east of Pelican Rapids
Little fall color remains above ground, but areas with pockets of dull yellow and orange can still be found.

 Crow Wing State Park -Brainerd
The prairie grasses remain peak shades of gold and maroon. While lots of green leaves remain, the birch and aspen have yellowed and are dropping leaves rapidly. The oak trees are beginning to turn rust, maroon and gold. The Virginia creeper vines and the sumac continue to display bright red leaves. It is a nice time to walk the Red River Oxcart trail along the Mississippi River.

Mille Lacs Kathio State Park -Onamia
Rain, high winds and snow have really hampered the vivid fall colors that are typical at Kathio. After two snowfalls, many leaves have fallen before turning color- others are just turning brown. Although the forest is mostly past peak, some nice fall color remains in the oaks, and the tamaracks are at peak shades of gold and orange.

Lake Maria State Park -Monticello
Despite past peak conditions, some great fall color remains throughout the park. The maples continue to display yellow and gold leaves. The oaks are at peak shades of rusty red and maroon. Many songbirds and waterfowl are migrating through the park, and there have been lots of deer, beaver and wild turkey sightings.

Twin Cities Metropolitan Vicinity

Wild River State Park -east of North Branch
Cold temperatures, snow and rain have put a damper on the fall colors. Many of the maples have lost their leaves. The oaks are still holding on, but their colors are not very brilliant. You can find a few spots of nice fall color along the paved bike trail, the River Trail, and the Deer Creek Loop on the interior of larger woodlands. The trees and shrubs are now past their peak.

Afton State Park -Afton, north of Hastings
It looks like there will be two peak fall color periods this year, with the bright maples already past their peak, and the oaks and aspens just starting to peak. Very little green remains in the hardwoods so now is the time to head out before all of the color is on the ground. Many more eagles, turkey vultures and other raptors are being seen along the river. There have been more turkeys than normal seen within the park as well.

Fort Snelling State Park -St. Paul
While fall colors are at roughly 75-100 percent of their peak, the leaves are falling quickly. Shades of yellow are predominate, and the Pike Island Trail is still lined with lots of nice yellow and gold pockets. Wild turkeys remain plentiful in the park.

Minnesota Landscape Arboretum -Chaska/Chanhassen
Fall color is at its peak at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. Currently 60 percent of the trees are exhibiting fall color, with yellows predominating. The recent freezing temperatures caused sugar maples to turn bright yellow, with barely a trace of red pigments. The woods on the Arboretum grounds are striking, with the canopy and understory turning color at the same time – a very unusual occurrence. The white and red oaks are yellow and russet rather than the typical deep reds. The dogwoods, viburnums, Juneberries, dwarf bush honeysuckles, chokeberries, burning bush and amur maples are contributing accents of red, salmon, orange and maroon. The tamarack and aspen stand out with their bright golden yellow hues. The prairie grasses continue to display golden russet tones.

Three Rivers Park District parks -Hennepin, Scott, Carver, Dakota and Wright counties
Peak fall color should arrive this week and linger into the following week. Many of the oak trees are turning golden yellow and deep crimson/burgundy colors. The sugar and red maples continue their showy displays of vibrant yellow, orange, and red. The dogwoods are just past their peak, but some of their crimson leaves remain above ground. Birch, basswood, and aspen are adding bright yellow and orange to the mix. In general, the tree species that remain green are non-native, except for the conifers. Most of the native wildflowers and grasses are winding down their displays. The fall color continues to be somewhat behind schedule, however, this week should provide an excellent opportunity enjoy fall color throughout Three Rivers Park District.

Southern Minnesota

Nerstrand Big Woods State Park -Nerstrand, south of Northfield
The recent strong winds have stripped the leaves from the trees in the open areas and on the outer edges of the forests. The natural features of the land, lots of wildlife, and the many nests that are normally hidden have become visible. A walk into the woods and other more sheltered areas offer views of bright yellow maples. The oak trees are just beginning to turn rusty red.

Frontenac State Park -Frontenac, south of Red Wing
Peak fall color should arrive this week, and the weekend of October 23-25 should still offer a beautiful fall color views within the park and along Highway 61, weather permitting.

Great River Bluffs State Park -southeast of Winona
While some trees have started to drop their leaves without changing color, most of the foliage is at its peak and displaying beautiful red, orange and yellow fall color.

Forestville/Mystery Cave State Park -Preston
The oaks are rapidly changing color, with many bright yellow and orange leaves covering the red and pin oaks. Some maples have retained their bright yellow leaves, and most aspen trees are at peak shades of yellow. The upcoming weekend will be one of the best for color this year. When planning your visit, print the road detour map found on the park’s Web page.

Whitewater State Park -Elba, north of St. Charles
Recent sunshine, warmer temperatures, and frost-free nights have resulted in brighter colors throughout the Whitewater valley. Most maples are showing nice red, orange and yellow fall color, and the pace of the oak transformation is picking up. The bright blue/purple New England asters are also beautiful. Fall colors should be best in the next ten days.

Lake Louise State Park -LeRoy, near the Iowa border
Park officials report an overall 75-100 percent change in the park foliage. The oak and aspen leaves are nearing their peak, with beautiful yellow, orange and crimson leaves. The bur oaks are displaying nicely contrasting bronze and tan leaves. This coming weekend should be best for fall color at Lake Louise.

Minneopa State Park -Mankato
Park staff report past peak conditions. The fall colors are fading and the leaves are falling. The Falls Day Use area is covered in yellow leaves, and the waterfalls are running great for the month of October!

Lake Shetek State Park -Currie, north of Slayton
While most tree species have dropped their leaves, the oaks are retaining many of their golden brown leaves. The sumac remains very pretty, especially at the entrance to the park. A walk around Loon Island still offers lots of scenic views.
