Just some of the highlights this week include the 9th Annual Street Faire at the Lakes in Detroit Lakes, the Minnesota Homegrown Kickoff in Richmond, the Flint Hills International Children’s Festival in St. Paul, and the annual Dam Days Celebration in Morristown.

Northern Minnesota

Historic Fishing with Kids will be offered at the North West Company Fur Post in Pine City on Saturday, May 30. Come sit on the banks of the Snake River, learn about historic fishing methods, and use a cane pole and cork bobber. Other methods used during the era will be discussed as well. Downtown Detroit Lakes will be the site of the 9th Annual Street Faire at the Lakes, Saturday and Sunday, May 30 & 31. This juried arts and craft show will feature invited artisans from across the country, with over 120 vendors, great food and live entertainment. The annual Boreal Birding & Northern Landscapes Festival will be held throughout Grand Marais and the surrounding area, Thursday through Sunday, June 4-7. Come discover the birds, wildflowers and geology of the area through a series of inter-related, field-focused workshops and courses. Each course offers participants its own unique mixture of field trips, classroom discussions and afternoon workshops, complemented by evening presentations and programs. Whiteside Park in Ely will be the site of a Dock Dogs event, Friday through Sunday, June 5-7, with canine dock jumping and dock diving competitions. To learn more, dial 1-800-777-7281, or check out www.ely.org

The 18th Annual Willie Walleye Day will be held Saturday, June 6, in the city of Baudette, with a full day of crafts, games, sales, vendors, a 5K run, a parade, live entertainment, food booths, and a street dance. For more information, dial 218/634-2967, or visit www.lakeofthewoodsmn.com

Central Minnesota

The Minnesota Homegrown Kickoff will be held Friday through Sunday, May 29-31, at El Rancho Manana near the city of Richmond. This three day outdoor music and camping festival features stage shows by more twenty-four regional bluegrass, old-time, and related bands. In addition, enjoy workshops, dances, food vendors, and jam sessions. The campground also offers horseback riding, boat rental, fishing, and a swimming beach. Ernies on Gull Lake, located north of Brainerd, will hold the Minnesota Fishing Challenge on Saturday, May 30 to raise funds for Teen Challenge. Teams will bring their fish to the weigh-in stage, where there will be free stage shows and weigh-in ceremonies. Trophies will be awarded for various categories, and there will be a wide array of prizes given away. In addition, Fishing for Life youth activities and games will be offered, and the Centershot Archery range will be open to youngsters. Numerous programs and events will be offered at Sibley State Park, located just north of Willmar at the city of New London, on Saturday and Sunday, May 30 & 31. On Saturday, visitors will enjoy Songs of the Forest, Fish Features & Facts, and Remarkable Reptiles. And on Sunday, programs will include the Bluebird Conservation Story, and Woodland Wildflowers. Take A Kid Fishing Day events and a Bike Safety Rodeo will be offered at the Glenwood City Park on Saturday, June 6, with information and activities to teach your kids how to fish and learn water safety that could save their lives. In addition, kids will learn about bicycle safety and hand signals. Admission is free and prizes will be distributed to each participating child! Twin Cities Greater Metropolitan vicinity

The Wildlife Science Center in Forest Lake will offer a Canine Carnival on Saturday, May 30, in a tribute to dogs both wild and domestic. Come enjoy presentations by the science center staff on the resident wolves, as well as wolf-dog hybrids, foxes, and visiting canine groups! Bring your pet along for the fun! The Flint Hills International Children’s Festival will take place at the Ordway Center in St. Paul, Saturday and Sunday, May 30 & 31. This family event features incredible international performers inside. Outside, enjoy free art activities, a parade, an art walk, international foods, dancing and singing with performers on the World Stage, and more! Downtown Afton will be the site of the 16th Annual Afton May Fair, Saturday and Sunday, May 30 & 31, with a variety of artists showcasing glasswork, jewelry, pottery, furniture, fine paintings, and photography. In addition, enjoy children’s activities, live music, a special appearance by meteorologist and local celebrity Sven Sundgaard, an old-fashioned pie baking contest, Vasa Swedish folk dancers, great food, and specialty vendors. A Classic Car Show will be offered Friday, June 5 in downtown North St. Paul. This free family event features over 800 classic cars, as well as great food and live music. Cars range from early 1900’s vintage Model T’s to mid-1970’s customs, classics, and restorations. This event will be repeated each Friday through September 18. The Minnesota State Fairgrounds in St. Paul will host a variety of shows, Saturday and Sunday, June 6 & 7, including the Great American Gem Show & Sale at the Progress Center, and the Minnesota Antiques Dealers Show at the Fine Arts Center. Southern Minnesota

The annual Dam Days Celebration will be held in downtown Morristown, Friday through Sunday, May 29-31. Come enjoy a twilight parade Friday evening, with over 125 units participating. Gold Star Amusements carnival and lots of food stands will be available all weekend. Other highlights include a car show, soapbox derby, medallion hunt, kids’ fishing contest, a tractor pull, the Rivers Edge Art Show, historical walking tours, a brunch, duck drop, karaoke, bingo, and live entertainment under a big top tent. The Hubbard House in Mankato will host the Hubbard House 20 Year Tribute on Saturday and Sunday, May 30 & 31, to celebrate 20 years of historic restoration. Featured will be costumed guides and characters, vintage photo opportunities, a chance to meet the craftspeople and companies that played a part in this historic renovation, a picnic in the park, and special sales at the Carriage House Store. Buffalo Days will take place throughout the city of Luverne, Friday through Sunday, June 5-7, beginning with a Friday Cruise-In. On Saturday, enjoy a parade, motorcycle rally, a waffle feed, live entertainment, a classic car auction and swap meet, the world famous buffalo chip throwing contest, and Arts in the Park with over 100 vendors. Lanesboro, the Rhubarb Capitol of Minnesota, will host the annual Rhubarb Festival on Saturday, June 6. In addition, there will be a Rhubarb Olympics, a Rhubarb Reading Run, Rhubarb Rant Speakers Corner, awards and prizes, and entertainment by the Rhubarb Sisters.
