Mar 19th 2008 Minnesota Puts Out Welcome Mat for RVs

RV campingWith 34,000 campsites in almost 800 campgrounds, most of them lakeside, Minnesota is almost custom-made for camping and touring by RV. In fact, this July St. Paul will be hosting the Family Motor Coach Association’s convention. This gathering will draw about 5,000 motorhomes and 10,000-15,000 participants to the State Fairgrounds.

Mar 19th 2008 Chippewa National Forest: Come Explore During Its Centennial Year

The Lost 40, Chippewa National ForestOne hundred years ago, President Theodore Roosevelt signed the papers that established the first national forest east of the Mississippi River, the Minnesota National Forest in the heart of the state. In 1928, it was renamed the Chippewa National Forest. This vast area of lakes and woods is about 50 miles wide and 60 miles long.

Central Lakes TrailA ribbon of trail curls through the bucolic countryside in the heart of Minnesota, providing 127 smooth, paved miles of biking. It’s currently the longest continuous stretch of bike trail in the state, and certainly one of the longest in the country. But the folks in Lake Wobegon don’t brag about such things, so it’s still relatively undiscovered.

Mar 19th 2008 Tall Ships Sail Into Duluth

The ships will be in port as part of the Duluth Maritime Festival, celebrating the state’s Sesquicentennial. There will be a concert at Bayfront Festival Park Saturday evening, with other entertainment planned for the weekend, as well.

Naturalist at Itasca State ParkGeocaching: A High-Tech Hunt for Minnesota History

Geocaching, a kind of high-tech treasure hunt, is at the center of a new program that Minnesota State Parks is rolling out for the summer of 2008 in celebration of the state’s 150th birthday. Geocaching, which has become very popular in the past few years, is a modern hide-and-seek game using GPS (global positioning system) devices to track down a stash hidden at a location that has been posted on a website by latitude and longitude. The GPS is a hand-held, computerized navigational tool used to track these global coordinates via satellite technology.
